The problem with mumblecore is that it tries so hard to seem "real" that it takes you out of the movie and makes you realize you're sitting in a seat watching people trying very very hard to seem real. And then it seems even more contrived. It's like, be a movie where each scene requires a lot of takes, or be The Hills, but don't try to do in-between. I could be completely and totally wrong about In Search Of A Midnight Kiss, which opens next weekend in NY and LA, (and IFC films are usually good), but it just screams "annoying" to me. But then again, I loved Before Sunrise when it came out, so maybe I'm just old:
