Liturgy – “Reign Array”
Brooklyn’s Liturgy have a rep for being black metal experimenters, but their forthcoming album The Ark Work isn’t really a metal album at all. Instead, it’s dense and textured experimental music that sometimes pulls an idea or two from the metal underground. Take, for example, the 11-minute “Reign Array,” which follows “Quetzalcoatl” as the second album track that the band has shared. It’s got those roiling beyond-rhythm black-metal drums, and there’s perhaps a bit of the genre in the guitars. But the song is more of a chanting, chiming ritualistic art rock epic, one with some truly beautiful moments. Also, I think there’s a bagpipe in there? There might be a bagpipe. Listen to “Reign Array” below.
The Ark Work is out 3/24 via Thrill Jockey.
