Lower Dens – “Ondine”
Baltimore dream-rockers Lower Dens already released the inescapable-loneliness riff “To Die In L.A.,” and today they’ve shared “Ondine.” Both songs are on the band’s forthcoming third album, Escape From Evil, but while “To Die In L.A.” bursts up into a spacey, uplifting chorus, “Ondine” lurks in an equally alluring, regretful mode. “I will treat you better/ I will treat you better,” Jana Hunter entreats on the chorus over a gauzy spiderweb of guitar. But she doesn’t seem to hold out much hope in herself to actually follow through, or receive a response to the pleas. Hunter’s emotional, throaty alto manages to make the quickly descending gloom of a song about loss sound still slightly hopeful. Listen.
Escape From Evil is out 3/31 on Ribbon Music.
