The Midwestern Charm – “Can’t Stand It” (Stereogum Premiere)
Milwaukee power-pop trio the Midwestern Charm will reissue their album Growing Pains next month on Texas Is Funny, the label home of shoegaze greats Glish, hardcore heroes Ex-Breathers and other underground rock ‘n’ rollers of repute. “Can’t Stand It” is not a cover of Wilco’s excellent Summerteeth opener, but its urgent jangle counts Jeff Tweedy’s early work among its many relevant touchpoints. Angsty mid-’90s alt-rock radio looms largest — think Gin Blossoms or Del Amitri or Weezer with a pinched nose — and there’s a furious emo undercurrent, particularly in the feedback-laden intro. Confused yet? Suffice it to say that if you like melodic guitar pop, you will be infatuated with this music. Listen below.
Growing Pains is out in April on Texas Is Funny.
