Ryn Weaver – “The Fool”
Ryn Weaver’s voice delves into caverns when it needs to, a strength she flexed on “OctaHate” to give real weight to a playful, childlike beat. But what makes “The Fool,” the title track from her forthcoming debut album, so strange and wonderful is how Weaver does the opposite. Instead of plunging deeper vocally, a nifty bit of studio flipping (via co-producers Benny Blanco and Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos) lets her upper range squeal out a lingering hook. It skitters so high so suddenly, like a squirrel up a tree, that it’s disarming and immediately memorable. It’s also the kind of expertly placed melody that catapults a good song into the stratosphere of greatness. Hell, even the end of the song sounds like a spaceship rattling its way through the clouds — as the rockets of Weaver’s burgeoning career begin to fire. Listen below.
