PINS – “Young Girls”
On the splash page for their band website, all four members of Manchester dream-punk quartet PINS are shotgunning cans of Budweiser. They’re achieving this trashy rite of passage with varying degrees of success, but one thing is clear: They’re having fun. It’s a moment that captures the spontaneous, mischievous energy that courses through their music, but more importantly, it captures their spirit.
“We’re not trying to be brave/ We don’t want to be saved,” vocalist Faith Holgate asserts on their latest song “Young Girls,” letting the air out of hero/victim mythology in favor of, well, fun. The all-female quartet — composed of Holgate, Lois McDonald on guitar, Anna Donigan on bass, and drummer Sophie Galpin — will release their sophomore record Wild Nights this summer. “Young Girls” follows their first single “Too Little Too Late,” and both ooze fierce independence over balanced, mathy rock and breathy harmonies. I was a fan of the four-piece’s debut 2013 album Girls Like Us, but this new single might be my favorite thing they’ve done yet. “What will we do when our dreams come true?” Holgate muses on the chorus. As the photo above indicates, the answer is: Whatever they want. Listen below.
