Eddi Front’s debut EP was one of those hidden gems in my music library that I figured I would never hear from again, a one-off that was destined to disappear to the sands of time. I don’t really remember how I first stumbled across the bare bones, sparse collection — I even own it on vinyl, but have no recollection of how I got it — but I’ve returned to it every few months without fail, drawn in by the dusty, romantic quality of the music. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw a new song pop up from the songwriter (real name Ivana Carrescia) earlier today, along with the news of a proper debut album in the wings. “Elevator” is the same kind of no frills song that was on her debut, and it’s just as potent. “Wouldn’t it be nice if I could melt myself like ice?” she muses; a twinkling piano responds. With some early Regina Spektor vocal quirks mixed in with the musty depths of Emily Haines’ solo work with the Soft Skeleton, Eddi Front’s music feels similarly ageless. “Another man, another stupid display,” she rattles off bitterly. “I’m a tiny little fly, drowning in a lake.” Listen below.
