Meredith Graves – “Took The Ghost To The Movies”
One of my biggest questions going into this year is: What will a Meredith Graves solo album end up sounding like? Of course, we already have some idea — she already has two full-lengths under her belt, one with Perfect Pussy and one with Shoppers — but a solo release could end up being a different beast altogether. There’s still no word on when an album will come out, though it’s been in the works for a while now, but we finally have Graves’ first official solo track, which provides some hint and the direction it could go in. “Took The Ghost To The Movies” will be officially released later this month as a part of Kevin Devine’s Devinyl Splits single series, and it’s as complicated and alienating of a track as you could expect from Graves. I personally love it, but I can see why someone may not — it starts out with a mournful guitar strum that is quickly overtake by a vicious, backbreaking drum machine that marks time alongside Graves’ dulled, indecipherable vocals. It makes me feel a lot of things, but I’m not exactly sure what and I’m not exactly sure why. It’s one of those songs that you want to blast in your headphones when the world feels like it’s too much and you want to block everything out, a noise dirge to silence the cacophony of the outside world.
