The-Dream – “Black Magic”
The-Dream is putting the finishing touches on his latest album, Crown Jewel, and today one of the album’s most magical tracks has made its way on to the internet. It’s a little disorganized, but the album will be a combination of The-Dream’s two EPs: Crown, which is out now, and Jewel, which is out sometime in June. “Black Magic” will be on Jewel and the full album, but you can hear it now before either of those are officially released. It’s a prime example of what makes Terius Nash a songwriting force; he’s addressing the way some of us self-sabotage and ruin what we want the most, especially when it comes to relationships. The spell here isn’t to force a girl to fall in love with him or vice-versa, but to prevent both of them from sabotaging the great thing they have. That’s such a complicated, real topic, but Nash smooths the whole story out like silk, creating a funk-slink that’s complete with brass flourishes, a spare beat as the backbone, and his flawless croon. Oh and there’s even an excellent rap verse for good measure. Listen here.
Crown Jewel is out 7/10 on Capitol Records. Pre-order it here.
