Technically speaking, Payola is only Desaparecidos’ second album, even if they’ve released plenty of one-off tracks over the years. This year, Conor Oberst picked up the threads of his politically minded punk band, put together a new album, and is touring behind the album, even playing big tent festivals like Coachella. Mike Mogis is producing it and we’ve heard “City On The Hill” and seen its vintage-patchwork video, and today they’ve released another new song, “Backsell.” Whether he’s wringing his heart out over slow-strummed acoustics or gunning behind a surging electric guitar solo, I will never, ever tire of Oberst’s urgently jagged, completely earnest voice.
