Dog Party – “Sapphires” (Stereogum Premiere)
Everything about Dog Party’s particular brand of punk is roughly hewn and brambly. The band’s simplistic, daring instrumentation pairs with joint vocal harmonies that cradle an unparalleled confidence worthy of Exene Cervenka. But on a song like “Sapphires,” the audacity of Dog Party’s sonic endeavor does little to belie the lyrical anxieties beneath. This is a song about wanting to fall desperately in love but not necessarily having the confidence, or the appropriate pool of potential partners, to do so. This frustration can easily be misattributed to age: Lucy and Gwen Giles, the two members who comprise Dog Party, are 16 and 19 years old, respectively. The sisters signed to Burger Records following the release of their 2013 full-length Lost Control, an impressive right of passage for any punk-influenced garage band coming out of California in this decade. Dog Party’s a young band, but searching for the kind of lover who will tell you your “eyes glow like sapphires” is an ageless — some might even say futile — endeavor.
