Shamir – “Merry Go ‘Round” (Kacey Musgraves Cover)
“Merry Go ‘Round” was the debut single by Kacey Musgraves, a pop-country star who broke in 2013 with her album Same Trailer Different Park. The track would go on to win a Grammy for Best Country Song, and now, the honorable Shamir Bailey has covered it for Annie Mac’s BBC1 radio show. If you’ve listened to Shamir’s stunning debut album, Ratchet, then you know that the Las Vegas-based artist has the pipes for practically any genre, but his no-holds-barred electro-pop-R&B might seem initially far-removed from Musgraves. But before Shamir found his hybridized sound, he wanted to be a country star, and we’ve already heard him cover Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Built Me” back in 2014, long before Ratchet dropped. His rendition of “Merry Go ‘Round” is stunning. It starts at 8:41, following a performance of his breakout single “On The Regular” at the 3:00 mark, but it’s definitely worth listening to the entire show, because talent aside, Shamir is one of the most charming and instantly lovable musicians making it big these days. Check it out below.
Ratchet is out now via XL.
