Spoon – “Inside Out (DJ Quik Remix)” (Feat. Iamsu!, Kurupt, & Boogie)
Britt Daniel has said from the beginning that Spoon’s floaty, experimental piano-pop single “Inside Out” was inspired by Dr. Dre’s 2001. Now one of Dre’s fellow West Coast rap veterans, DJ Quik, has produced a new version of the much-remixed track that fully capitalizes on its hip-hop potential. It’s the latest offering from Yours Truly’s Songs From Scratch series, and it’s awesome. Quik’s remix amplifies the melancholy strains of the original production, and it features rap verses from young Bay Area star Iamsu! and G-funk O.G. Kurupt plus a sing-song outro from Boogie. I’m fairly certain it’s the first recorded instance of a rapper uttering, “In a dark room, listening to Spoon.” As Quik explained to Yours Truly, “They did this as an ode to the Dr. Dre-era sound that he doesn’t even do anymore. I miss that shit too.” Listen below, where you can also watch a documentary about the making of the song.
