Years & Years – “Shine (Danny L Harle Remix)”
Years & Years are pretty middle of the road as far as up-and-coming pop acts go, but their latest single “Shine” is one of their better songs, and they have a huge asset in the amazing voice of frontman Olly Alexander. It makes sense that a remix could pull out all of the disparate parts of a good song that are hidden away in there, and PC Music’s Danny L Harle is up to the task. The original track seems stuck in second gear and, maybe it’s intentional, but it feels like Years & Years are holding back on what could very clearly be a jam. Harle has no qualms whatsoever of blasting this song into the stratosphere, turning it into the barn-burner that it should be. Alexander’s vocals are pitch-shifted, letting them take on a remorseful, revenge-bent quality. And with a darker synth propped up below him, it makes the belted-out chorus feel deserved, and locks the track into sharp focus. Listen below.
