Purple – “The Deepest Night”
Purple is a member of WEDIDIT, Shlohmo’s crew that I affectionately dubbed an electronic gloom collective when we premiered “Never Come Back.” Like his contemporaries Shlohmo, RL Grime, or even OVO’s the Weeknd, Purple’s strength lies in his ability to turn devastation into a plush, velvety thing. On his latest song, “The Deepest Night,” Luis Dourado captures the essence of a pit-in-your-stomach argument; using lush textures and suffocating beats to amplify his jagged lyrics. Even without the words, this song captures all the awful, before-bed annoyance of arguing with someone who makes your life miserable. Dourado smooths the conflict but leaves the end out in plain sight, as inevitable as the rising sun. Listen.
