The incestuous nature of many of the music scenes currently on the rise in the U.S. is a great thing. One of the best examples of this is in the Boston area, where pretty much every newer band that’s hitting it big right now are friends with one another. (It also doesn’t hurt that most of them share a label in Exploding In Sound.) That kind of interconnectedness leads to some inspired collaborations, like the new project Philadelphia Collins — named after a Trailer Park Boys character — made up of Speedy Ortiz guitarist Devin McKnight and Ovlov drummer Theo Hartlett. On their debut EP, Derp Swervin’, they recruit some of the best up-and-coming talent from the surrounding area and use them to great effect. Palehound mastermind Ellen Kempner is the featured guest on “Sofa Queen” and her precipitous, breathy vocals fit nicely atop the duo’s splintering, dusty framework. As the guitars whip themselves into a noisy scrawl, Kempner contemplates being bruised and alone, waiting for a sign of what to do next. “You call me out, you call me in,” she repeats. Listen below.
