Widowspeak – “All Yours”
Yesterday we premiered “Girls,” the lead single off Widowspeak’s new album All Yours, and I bemoaned the loss of an old interview I’d done with the band about their gorgeous hair. Well, today two great new additions to this story: First, some internet wizard found an archived version of that interview on the deep web, and second, the band have now shared their record’s title track as well. Widowspeak have always been a band that capitalizes on unlikeliness — that’s something I’ve always loved about them. As such, “All Yours” isn’t a song about belonging to someone or some place, but instead, the way these places and people can be suddenly ripped from your life, devoid of their old, plush safety. Molly Hamilton sings about her pain in a languid, detached way that indicates she’s come to peace with these losses, but the bright flecks of Robert Earl Thomas’ guitar suggest otherwise. This is velvet country-rock that dwells partially in peacefulness and partially in desolation. Even if their dreamy, shoegaze update changes the scenery a bit, that’s where country music has always lived. Listen.
