Algiers – “Black Eunuch (Liars Remix)”
The core of Band To Watch Algiers’ “Black Eunuch” is a skeletal vocal line of charred gospel harmonies, a choir’s swell of dramatic, ominous voices echoing wordlessly. Since we already know that experimental post-punk outfit Liars favor cold minimalism and sputtering static, it’s unsurprising that this gospel chant is the primary piece of the original song they structured their remix around. Though Algiers program their own beats and provide natural rhythms by clapping and stomping, Liars amped up the percussion to eleven, threading that warm harmony line through mazes of jittery, manic rhythms and synths.
