Stream Bullion Rooster EP (Stereogum Premiere)
Greco-Roman is a label that never ceases to put out cool electronic tunes, declaring “we make colorful music because we dance in the dark” and releasing records by Disclosure, Roosevelt, TCTS, Lxury, and Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard among others. One of their signees, London producer Bullion, is a rainbow among even the most colorful of artists with his weirdly wonderful experimental pop. He’s released a string of EPs and singles since his 2007 debut, and just produced Baltimore rapper Rye Rye’s song “Keep Up.” Now he returns with an EP called Rooster, an instrumental menagerie with chaotic ambiance. Bullion proves that nothing is off limits as he incorporates rooster crows on the opening track, a bagpipe intro on “Stuck In The Muddle,” and electro percussion layered with jazz horns on “Chant.” Electronic beats drive the EP through all the funkiness, accompanied by synths reminiscent of vintage video game soundtracks. Vocals mainly consist of small snippets and chant-like echoes, except for “Pull Your Rug Away” which features a leading performance from fellow Brit singer-songwriter ESKA. Rooster is an enjoyably bizarre, sometimes dancey, all-around well-crafted trip. Stream it below.
Here’s the video for “Saysah!” while we’re at it.
