Diät – “Toonie”
Something it took me a long time to realize about punk is that it’s one of the most optimistic forms of music. I used to wrongly assume that anything this loud and noisy must be angry, but the more I listened to bands like Yung (and other artists on Tough Love’s roster), the more I realized that this music is ebullient, effusive and positive. Diät’s new record isn’t coming through Tough Love — Iron Lung in the U.S. and Adagio 380 in Europe — but the East Berlin punk act shares a similar sensibility. Perhaps that’s why they chose to name their new album Positive Energy, to make sure absolutely nothing got lost in translation. “Toonie” is the debut track off that record, and it’s the kind of song that makes me want to sprint on a treadmill, leap over a fence, or drive way too fast. Sure, it’s dark and heavy, but it also bursts with joyful, scalding energy. The positive tension in this song is so strong, that when it ends without warning after only two and a half minutes, it feels like someone let all the air out of the room. Diät are making abrupt, careening punk with an irresistible spark that borders on, dare I say, accessible? Listen.
Positive Energy is out 9/18 on Iron Lung Records. Pre-order it here.
