The 5 Best Videos Of The Week
If anything big came out on Thursday evening, you’ll note that it’s not on this list. I wrote this yesterday afternoon, as I am now on a plane to Chicago for the Pitchfork Music Festival. If you see me there, say hi; I’ll be the tall guy. Even without any late-breaking additions, this was a big week. Shout out to two videos that just missed the cut: Drake’s “Energy,” which is fun and absurd even if its jokes are all of the Family Guy “here’s a famous thing” school, and Gal Pals’ “Ex-Marionette,” which is brimming over witch charm even if it had no budget at all. Below, take a look at the videos that did make this week’s list.
5. PUP – “Dark Days” (Dir. Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux & Chandler Levack)
Why does anyone ever go on tour? Somehow, it looks even more like hell on earth than usual when it’s rendered in colorful cartoon form.
4. Boosie Badazz – “I’m Sorry” (Dir. Motion Family)
It’s hackneyed and melodramatic, sure, but just watch this man with his kids and try not to get choked up.
3. M.I.A. – “Broader Than A Border” (Dir. M.I.A.)
M.I.A. is barely in her own self-directed video, and yet she still comes across as an absolute world-crushing badass, even among the Indian sword-spinning girls and the “spiritual warrior” dancer from the Ivory Coast.
2. Yo La Tengo – “Friday I’m In Love” (Dir. Jason Woliner)
“Witness: ‘I Could Hear The Hearts Beating Us Down.'” I’m sorry; that’s just funny.
1. U2 – “Song For Someone” (Dir. Vincent Haycock)
Do you ever see a really great acting performance in a music video and think, in the direction of the person doing the acting, You are enormously overqualified for this! What are you doing here? Yeah. That’s Woody Harrelson here.
