The German/Swiss Krautrock, kosmische, and electronic music pioneer Dieter Moebius passed away this morning, as Exclaim reports. His Harmonia and Cluster bandmates Michael Rother and Hans-Joachim Roedelius both confirmed the news on Facebook. He was 71 years old.

While studying art in Germany in the 1960s, Moebius met Roedelius and Tangerine Dream’s Conrad Schnitzler, and the trio founded the seminal Krautrock band Kluster in 1969, changing their name to Cluster after Schnitzler’s departure in 1971. The remaining duo then moved to the rural village of Forst to build their own studio, where they were joined by Neu!’s Michael Rother, forming a new group called Harmonia. Ambient legend Brian Eno reportedly described Harmonia as the “world’s most important rock band,” and he came to Forst to live and record with them for 11 days. The resulting sessions were eventually released in 1997 as Tracks And Traces, and Eno also collaborated with Cluster on two albums, 1978’s Cluster And Eno and 1979’s After The Heat.

In addition to his work with Cluster and Harmonia, Moebius had an extremely prolific solo career, maintaining a near-constant stream of projects and collaborations until his passing. He released his latest album, Nidemonex, just last year. Hear some of his work below.
