Julien Baker – “Sprained Ankle”
Julien Baker has virtually no online footprint; her Facebook page boasts just over 200 “likes,” and her Bandcamp hasn’t even gone live yet. But the Murfreesboro musician has been on the scene for a while as a member of Memphis’ Forrister, and her debut solo LP, Sprained Ankle, is slated to be released this coming fall. The record’s title track debuted today, and though its lyricism carries a similar intimacy heard in Forrister’s songs, this one is much more instrumentally muted and atmospheric. Baker’s voice opens up and closes in on itself as it lilts, carrying each heartbreaking line like small, burdensome shards of shattered glass when there’s no place to bury them. Listen below.
Sprained Ankle is out 8/23 on 6131 Records.
