Skylar Spence – “Affairs”
Skylar Spence’s Prom King is shaping up swimmingly. The erstwhile SAINT PEPSI impressed us with his summer jam of a lead single “Can’t You See,” and its follow-up reminds us that his expertise extends beyond neon dance-party music. “Affairs” is a misty chillwave/synthpop breakup lament marked by echo-laden vocals and the melancholy refrain, “That’s the way to handle affairs.” Thus far, Ryan DeRobertis’ music has mostly been notable for its grooves and melodies, and this song excels in that arena as well. But the smart, simple lyrical turns here reveal an unforeseen emotional depth — from “I called your name in a crowd full of strangers/ I saw you look my way” to “My mind is racing and my heart’s on fire/ She’s loving somebody new.” It all adds up to a song that deploys the raw materials of heartache with stylized verve.
TL;DR all hail the Prom King!
