When not lending low-end to Savages’ lockstep post-punk attack, Ayşe Hassan teams with fellow bassist Kendra Frost as Kite Base. As demonstrated on early single “Dadum,” the duo makes experimental electronic music with a heavy rock undercurrent and occasional flashes of pop. It’s as dark-tinged and rhythmically charged as you’d expect from a member of Savages, but the singsong vocal interplay is just as likely to get under your skin as the industrial noise. There are traces of everything from Stereolab’s urban sophistication to PJ Harvey’s ferocity to Radiohead’s artful darkness to Sufjan Stevens’ childlike singsong in this music. Listen below.
