Watch A$AP Rocky & Vic Mensa Wild Out To Nirvana At Lollapalooza
Yesterday evening was the final day of Chicago’s Lollapalooza festival, and it featured A$AP Rocky, performing near the top of the bill, paying tribute to one of the bands who was once slated to headline the original ’90s Lolla. During his set, Rocky brought out local luminary Vic Mensa, who performed his big single “U Mad” to general chaos. And then, while Mensa was still onstage, Rocky’s DJ played Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” while the crowd acted the way crowds do when you throw on “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” That DJ also reportedly played House Of Pain’s “Jump Around,” though no footage of that seems to be online. Below, check out some footage of both “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “U Mad.”
Playing “Jump Around” has long been the ultimate suck-up-to-the-crowd move for rappers at rock festivals; I once saw goddam Wyclef do it. Playing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” may have dethroned it now. But Rocky is, at the very least, a Nirvana fan; he once told The Sun, “Growing up, I was aware of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and not just the usual stuff you’d expect growing up in Harlem. All that music shaped me.”
