Ryan Adams Is Covering Taylor Swift’s 1989 In The Style Of The Smiths
Stereogum has a comments section, so we know that there are people out there still resisting the charms of Taylor Swift’s ridiculously strong pop album 1989. But Ryan Adams is not one of them. Adams is a big enough fan of the album that he and his band are recording an entire full-length cover of the album. He’s documenting the entire experience on Instagram, and he says it’ll be “as played by the Smiths,” though the tiny bit of his “Welcome To New York” cover really sounds more like “as played by Ryan Adams.” We don’t yet know Adams’ plans for this cover, but maybe he’ll release it? Judging by his Instagram, Adams covered at least the first three songs on the album last night: “Welcome To New York,” “Blank Space,” and “Style.” And for her part, Swift seems to support the endeavor completely. In a Tweet to Swift, Adams says, “Badass tunes, Taylor. We’re sandblasting them and they’re holding steady.” Below, hear that bit of “Welcome To New York” and check out Adams’ Instagram photos of the sessions, and Swift’s response.

We don’t yet know Adams’ plans for this whole endeavor, but I really, really hope he releases it in some form.
