Straight Outta Compton Producer Eyeing Jennifer Hudson For Aretha Franklin Biopic
After the success of Straight Outta Compton — it garnered a whopping $60.2 million at the box office on opening weekend alone and sparked the release of a new Dr. Dre album — the movie’s producer is reportedly eyeing Jennifer Hudson for a role in a biopic about Aretha Franklin.
The Wrap reports that Compton producer Scott Bernstein is working on a version of the biopic for his own SMB Films. The project is untitled and has been in the works for several years, but it will focus on Franklin’s rise to prominence during the ’60s and ’70s and her relationship with abusive ex-husband Ted White.
Nothing has been officially offered, but a rep for Hudson did acknowledge that discussions have taken place. Hudson most recently appeared on Fox’s music-industry focused hit show Empire, and is slated to return for the second season.
