Natasha Kmeto – “Grind” (Feat. Tunde Adebimpe) (Stereogum Premiere)
Natasha Kmeto is a singer, songwriter, and producer out of Portland who mixes dark, simmering beats with her lush, clear alto. In 2013 she dropped her debut album Crisis and is following that up two years later with Inevitable. We’ve already heard the lead single “Come And Say,” an imperious R&B-tinged invitation, and today we’re premiering “Grind,” a bit of minimal, anxious majesty featuring Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio. Kmeto previously toured in support of Adebimpe’s band, and the two of them are ideal duet partners, subverting the form into an echoing chant of call and response. Few songs about anxiety manage to soothe you instead of stoking the fire, but “Grind” achieves that, smoothing out worry in rippling layers of vocal harmony, synths and spare beats. Listen.
Inevitable is out 9/18 via Dropping Gems. Pre-order it here.
UPDATE: As Pitchfork points out, the trailer for Nasty Baby, a film that stars Adebimpe alongside Kristen Wiig, has surfaced online. New of the film first broke in 2013, but it premiered earlier this year at Sundance and will come out in late October. Directed by Sebastián Silva, the plot centers around two gay men (Adebimpe and Silva) who are trying to conceive a baby with their best friend (Wiig). Obviously, complications ensue. watch below.
