Watch John McEnroe Try To Cover Nirvana’s “Territorial Pissings”
Have you ever heard tempestuous tennis great John McEnroe talk about music? It’s fucking weird, man. I once caught an episode of Morning Joe that had McEnroe and Joe Scarborough enthusing about the Replacements, a propos of absolutely nothing. And today, we get the confounding video of McEnroe, onstage at a bar in the Hamptons, singing Nirvana’s “Territorial Pissings.” “Territorial Pissings”! John McEnroe! Sports Illustrated reports that the show in question went down Saturday night at the Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett, New York, in front of a crowd that included fellow rich people Lorne Michaels and Harvey Weinstein. McEnroe was backed up by his daughter Ava and his wife, the ’80s cheese-rock star and former Scandal frontwoman Patty Smyth. Watch the video below.
That was pretty bad. But, to be fair, we never saw Kurt Cobain play tennis, and we’re still at least 20 years away from seeing fan-made video of Roger Federer covering the Weeknd at a club in the Hague or whatever. We don’t have a lot to compare it to.
