EL VY – “I’m The Man To Be”
A month ago, the National’s Matt Berninger and Menomena/Ramona Falls’ Brent Knopf teamed up under the name EL VY (“pronounced like a plural of Elvis,” according to a press release) and shared the lengthily-subtitled title track from their upcoming debut Return To The Moon. Now they’ve shared a second song, “I’m The Man To Be,” a swaggering, groove-heavy rocker with a slithering bassline. “There’s this great Schoolboy Q song ‘There He Go’ which samples Menomena’s ‘Wet And Rusting,'” Berninger explains. “I thought it would be funny to re-sample the same sample and do it from the perspective of a pathetic self-aggrandizing rocker alone in a hotel room. Something I know a lot about. That’s how it started but then Brent took the sample out and we wrote an entirely new song.” Listen below, and check out the accompanying lyric video directed by Tom Berninger, featuring the duo hanging around in Venice Beach and Santa Monica.
Return To The Moon is out 10/30 on 4AD.
