Watch Justin Bieber Perform “What Do You Mean” With The Roots, Take On ?uestlove In A Tonight Show Drum-Off
Last Friday, young lightning rod Justin Bieber dropped the graceful, sparkly, generally pretty great new single “What Do You Mean.” On Sunday night, he broke down in tears after singing it at the VMAs. And last night, he continued with the full-court press, appearing on The Tonight Show and singing the song while the Roots backed him up. This time around, he kept it together, and he got a guest verse from the Roots’ Black Thought. This kid has spent basically half his life performing, and he knows what he’s doing; the way he’d flirt with going into a full-on dance routine without ever giving into it was total superstar material. And since Bieber is too big of a star to be relegated to a mere musical-guest role, he pretty much took over The Tonight Show last night. In one segment, he and Roots bandleader ?uestlove got into a drum-off, a rematch of one that went down on Fallon’s Late Night show five years ago. ?uestlove handily ripped his head off, but you have to give the kid points for trying. And sitting down for an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Bieber talked a bit about getting emotional at the VMAs and blamed his various PR disasters on “a bunch of knuckleheads around me.”
In that interview, Bieber announces that his album is out 11/13.
