Stream Pontiak NOPE / JEPPE EP (Stereogum Premiere)
The three Virginia brothers who make up Pontiak, the great heavy-psych power trio, opened up a brewery called Pen Druid Brewing earlier this summer, which means they haven’t had much time to devote to their band lately. Last week, I saw the Carney brothers (all three of whom are, full disclosure, old friends) open for Kylesa in Charlottesville, and they just wrecked, so you should take whatever opportunity you get to see them. But even if they’ve dialed back the live shows, they haven’t stopped recording. And next week, they’ll release the five-song NOPE / JEPPE EP. It’s part of a series of five EPs coming out on Lightning Records, the label that Akron/Family member Seth Olinsky launched a few years ago. NOPE / JEPPE finds Pontiak spacing out and taking their time. Opener “Shit Sucks” is a 10-minute pedal-masher, while closer “Low Plains Confuser” is a six-minute acoustic-guitar rumination. Check out the full EP below.
The NOPE / JEPPE EP is out 9/18 on Lightning Records.
