SOFTSPOT are a Brooklyn-based quartet whose elegant art rock reflects upon life’s uncertain subjects. “Abalone” is the band’s new single, which follows their 2014 full-length release MASS. “Abalone” drifts calmly forward while guitars and keys percolate like bubbling water in a stream over a persistent, throbbing drumbeat. Sarah Kinlaw’s vocals pinch every word with elongated emphasis, giving the song’s illustrative lyricism a distinct pull. A little over halfway in, the track follows an entirely instrumental path that slowly shrouds itself in a gauzy mist. Listen.
