Tinashe – “Player” (Feat. Chris Brown)
Last year, the R&B singer Tinashe released the lovely, droning, spaced-out debut album Aquarius, one of the best pop-R&B albums of the past few years. She’s already announced plans to follow it up with a new album called Joyride, and she’s shared the excellent Young Thug collab “Party Favors.” But “Party Favors” wasn’t the album’s official first single. Instead, that honor goes to “Player,” a new track that regrettably features Chris Brown. It’s a good song. On Aquarius, there was a clear divide between the hazy whole and the club-inflected singles. “Player” is very much a club song, but it’s got a bit more of the free-floating atmosphere that Tinashe clearly loves so much. And as for Brown’s influence, he just comes in and delivers a half-rapped roughneck verse. If you absolutely need to have a Chris Brown feature, that’s a pretty good way to deploy him. Listen below.
There’s no release date yet on Joyride, but I’m ready for it.
