Young Chop – “Around My Way” (Feat. Vic Mensa & King 100 James)
The ascendant Chicago rapper Vic Mensa came from the same after-school freestyle scene that helped produce Chance The Rapper. So even though Mensa shares a hometown with hard-ass drill rappers like Chief Keef and Lil Durk, his context is very different. Lately, though, Mensa has been making harder, more cathartic records like “U Mad.” And now that he’s shown up on a track from drill producer and frequent Keef collaborator Young Chop, as Fake Shore Drive points out, he sounds like he belongs on it. Chop’s “Around My Way,” which also features drill rapper King 100 James, is an apocalyptically hard song, and Mensa sounds great on it. Check it out below.
It’s like Mensa has unlocked a video-game achievement here. He should do more of this.
