Plaitum – “Carousel” (Stereogum Premiere)
Plaitum - "Carousel" (Stereogum Premiere)
Equal parts austere and cinematic, London duo Plaitum craft a gothy sort of electro pop that brings M83-level synth maximalism into a darker, more despairing place. We posted their video for “LMHY” earlier this month, and “Carousel” is a second offering from their debut self-titled EP. Producing credits include Paul Epworth, who’s formerly worked with superstars Adele, U2, Coldplay, among tons of others. After a brief and quiet intro, “Carousel” explodes on impact. “‘Carousel’ is basically about drowning in someone else’s deception.” said singer and keyboardist Abi Dersiley. The enwrapping layers of heavy, forboding synths evokes this sense of drowning, especially amidst Dersiley’s wailing, operatic vocals. The climactic nature of the song matches passion with the force of colliding planets. Listen below.
Plaitum is out 12/04 on Wolf Tone.
