The Goon Sax – “Boyfriend” (Stereogum Premiere)
Aussie newcomers the Goon Sax excel in excruciatingly real, smart, self-deprecating lyrics about humdrum broken heart-related anxieties in post-adolescence: “I need a boyfriend/ Or just anything real.” Their latest track “Boyfriend” engages in less Courtney Barnett sing-speak than their last release “Sometimes Accidentally,” though it’s still just as witty — think Parquet Courts meets Talking Heads meets devastating, crushingly aching longing. The Brisbane-based teenagers’ brand of jangle-pop is tinged with a sense of glaringly self-aware pain. Happy-go-lucky vocals sing of very, very sad things: “And if I had a boyfriend, I’d love him all night/ And we can break your heart, so you see how I feel.” It’s stuff anyone can relate to. So when you see 16-year-olds on Facebook celebrating their one-month “anniversaries” together, you can celebrate your 21 years of aloneness with this new one from the Goon Sax. Listen below.
Boyfriend will be released 11/27 on Chapter Music. Pre-order it here.
