The DC/LA project MISUN (pronounced ‘me•sun’) play a bubbly, quietly chaotic brand of electro-pop that they’ve taken to calling “aquawave.” When we chatted with them during CMJ a few years back, Misun Wojcik spoke explicitly about an undying love for the Strokes and Julian Casablancas, but their latest offering “Give It Up” inhabits a very different sonic spectrum. Produced by Nacey, it’s a fun and catchy pop overture coated with twinkling beats and shining synths. Though heartache is at the core of the song, it’s encased in a happy instrumental built from chilled-out guitars and scanty harmonies and soaked in reverb-drenched sunshine. “Give It Up” transcends genres and decades, with influences ranging from ’60s pop to ambient R&B and soul; it’s all over the place in the most delightful way possible.
