Kool A.D. Samples “Classic Man,” Downton Abbey On 100-Track O.K. Mixtape
On Thanksgiving, while we were enjoying a gluttonous feast, rapper/producer/former Das Racist member Kool A.D. presented us with a gluttonous feast of a different kind: a whopping 100-track free mixtape. It’s entitled O.K., and he described it to The Fader as a “spiritual soundtrack” to his upcoming debut novel of the same name, which he hopes to put out this spring via indie publishing company Secret House. Each track corresponds to one of the book’s 100 chapters, and despite what you might imagine a 100-track mixtape to look like, these tracks are all full songs, not short interludes — only a few clock in under the minute mark, and some stretch out to 10 or 11 minutes. Despot, Mr. Muthafuckin Exquire, Talib Kweli, and Chairlift are featured, among others, and Toro Y Moi, Chief Keef, DJ Mustard, and Hot Sugar all have production credits. The Keyboard Kid-produced title track, which you can watch the video for below, samples the Downtown Abbey theme song, while “Classic Man” uses the beat from Jidenna’s song and was produced by Roman GianArthur, the Wondaland affiliate who showed up on the original. Not all of the tracks are new — see the Le1f-produced, Angel Haze-featuring “Jungle Fever Remix” or the Grizzly Bear-sampling “Jackson Pollock” — but many of them are, and you can listen to the whole thing below.
