Tangerine – “Sunset” (Stereogum Premiere)
Seattle garage pop trio Tangerine are gearing up to release their new Sugar Teeth EP next month. Their second offering from the EP is the fun, funky jaunt “Sunset.” The song opens with a grumbling bassline before layers of airy and distorted guitars ring out. Then whimsical, shouting vocals jump to the forefront before we hear from the guitars again on a delightfully freewheeling chorus. The delivery of the lyrics disguises some deep ruminations on growing up like “The forest is empty/ The night now is toothless/ I guess that must mean we’re all grown.” Singer-songwriter Marika Justad, who penned the lyrics, had this to say about the song:
“Sunset” is a toast to the intensity of being a teenager, to the weirdness of feeling so alive but also not yet fully-formed. At the same time, it’s about coming of age.
Mirroring that sentiment, the track switches from playfulness to a slow-tempo minute of moody solemnity before it ends. Tangerine’s translation of feeling on this track is superb. Check it out below.
