D∆WN – “Not Above That”
Dawn Richard has impressively evolved since her Danity Kane and Diddy Dirty Money days. Her solo offerings, GoldenHeart and Blackheart, were splendid, and she looks to complete the trilogy with RED*emp*tion later this year. Her latest one-offs, “Hollywould,” “Billie Jean x Dance,” and a cover of Adele’s “Hello,” were promising hints of another solid effort in the works.
“Not Above That” is the second single and latest offering from her new album, and it’s a huge, uptempo romp. Dance vibes delightfully clash with dense instrumental layers and poignant longing. It seems she has hit her stride, taking the aesthetic of her first album and the emotion of her second, and combining them on this track. If the whole album sounds like this, it will be fantastic. Listen.
“Not Above That” is out 1/29. Pre-order is available here. RED*emp*tion (aka The Red Era) is out later this year.
