Zula – “Not The Same” (Stereogum Premiere)
With a handful of releases to their name, Zula have been mainstays of the Brooklyn DIY scene for years now. Their show is an interpretive, immersive experience, so much so that I can distinctly remember the last time I saw them perform. It was at a bar last summer, and the quartet played either before or after their likeminded peers (and Band To Watch) Palm. What consistently amazes me about bands like Zula, Palm, or Philly’s Banned Books is their ability to craft songs that are mathy and complicated without being too intellectual or exclusive. Instead, they sound fun and catchy and effortless. Zula’s new one-off single “Not The Same” is a layered, seemingly unending structure of sound that builds up and collapses in its final moments. Listen below.
