Muna – “Winterbreak”
Self-described “dark-pop” group and Band To Watch MUNA’s new single “Winterbreak” places crystal-clear vocals on top of a lush and texturally diverse soundscape. With its gossamer pads, mid-tempo dance beat, and funk-influenced bass lines, the song follows in the footsteps of similarly lofty R&B-inspired bands like Wet and Chairlift. Setting relatively grounded instrumentals within a beautifully constructed, reverberating space, “Winterbreak” takes easily palatable melodies to craft a studied and interesting pop piece. The band shared some thoughts with The FADER:
This song is about a love that you can’t reconcile — wanting to make a home out of a person that has proved to you time and again that they are not a home; they are just a person. It’s about retracing scars, negative patterns, all with the silent belief that moments of communion and understanding might justify months of misfiring and regret. We’re all just trying to get back to that “first high” feeling — an honest endeavor, however futile.
“Winterbreak” will appear on MUNA’s upcoming debut EP. Listen below.
