Stream Lucy Dacus No Burden
I guess it goes without saying that any artist flying under a singer-songwriter banner, assuming they’re talented, is going to have a few things in common: a way with words, a wry observational wit, an eagerness to deconstruct the world around them and figure out how they fit into it. Richmond, VA musician Lucy Dacus proves to be especially acute at all of these on her debut album, No Burden. At different points, she sounds like Courtney Barnett, Angel Olsen, Sharon Van Etten, if only for the amount of words that roll off her tongue. What all of these artists share is a singular and unique point of view, and Dacus’ is rooted in self-interrogation and self-help. Her songs roll over you like waves, the matter-of-fact, plaintive delivery serving as a vessel for examining where things all went wrong and how to make them right again. Early singles “I Don’t Wanna Be Funny Anymore” and “Strange Torpedo” demonstrated levity and frustration in equal measure, and each track on No Burden balances on a similar emotional tightrope with a weary and familiar ease.
