Gallant – “Bourbon”
LA R&B singer and Sufjan Stevens pal Gallant has announced his new album Ology due later this spring. It seemed that there was something in the works after he recently shared two stellar offerings, the lovelorn “Skipping Stones” with Jhene Aiko and “Weight In Gold.”
Gallant’s voice is big and commanding, with an incredible range that overpowers lush, polished instrumentation. But on his new track “Bourbon,” he scales back a bit on his verses to play with the textures of his voice and bring a somber mood to a bright, synthed-out new wave aesthetic. His falsetto sits on top of the mix, but it isn’t as powerful as in the other singles, so when he gives the hook some gusto, it registers strongly. He wails “‘Cause since I’ve been found/ I’ve been living a life in cages/ Withering down/ To the champagne quicksand/ Wrestling doubt/ I’ve been dragging around for ages.” If the song were a cup of coffee, the sonics would be sugar and Gallant’s vocals are a hell of a shot of bourbon. Listen.
Ology is out 4/6 on Mind of a Genius.
