Parc en Ciel – “pH” (Stereogum Premiere)
Parc en Ciel is the project of Mathieu Thomas, a composer and science enthusiast raised near Paris and now working in Glasgow. His music represents a major change of pace for LuckyMe, the Scottish electronic collective owned in part by Hudson Mohawke whose artists include Rustie, TNGHT, and Cashmere Cat. It’s a brand of ambient post-rock that verges on New Age; Mark McGuire springs to mind as the closest reference point. Per Thomas, the music on Parc en Ciel’s upcoming Path Integral is inspired by the influential quantum physicist Richard Fenyman:
Path Integral is the name of the graphical analysis applied by Feynman to quantum dynamics. It shows in a conceptual and linear fashion how an electron and a positron combine to “release” a fictional photon, much like a word leaves a mouth.
Opening track “pH” expertly demonstrates the project’s appeal. It’s a jaunty electronic composition that could just as easily soundtrack a frantic car chase in a 1980s crime drama or a zany Adult Swim short. Let it ripple over you below.
