Young Magic – “Sleep Now”
NY-based avant-pop duo Young Magic are continuing down the path of rediscovery for vocalist Melati Malay on their forthcoming album, Still Life. Malay has roots in Indonesia and has featured them strongly with the use of the gamelan on the lead single “Lucien” and Indonesian rituals in the song’s video. The followup, “Sleep Now,” leans tribal as well, with more subtle gamelan, deep synth bass, muted drums, and atmospheric sweeps fusing around Malay’s ever feathery vocals. The accompanying clip, though not an official video, features footage of the documentary Lost In Bali, and the song is a perfect soundtrack for a glimpse of the life Malay is looking to reconnect with. There is some indigenous nudity, though, so be careful where you watch. Check it out.
Still Life is out 5/13 via Carpark. Grab it from the label or get “Lucien” instantly when you pre-order at iTunes.
