Boys – “Happy Hour” (Stereogum Premiere)
Swedish indie pop quintet Boys is the project of HOLY guitarist Nora Karlsson. They have a band name that makes them impossible to find online, but once you come across their bright, buoyant brand of pop with just the right amount of shoegaze, you won’t be disappointed. And look, you’ve come across it now. They are set to drop their latest offering, the Love On Tour EP, later this spring, and “Happy Hour” is the lead single.
The song was written after returning to Sweden from a grueling UK tour battling homesickness, only to find home did not provide the comforts the band longed for. Post-tour depression set in as the comedown from the excitement of road life and returning to the regular existence of a 20-year-old. Karlsson beautifully laments, “I woke up and saw the sun/ Then you told me/ ‘I would never say goodbye,'” as dissonant, jubilant guitar and crashing cymbals burst around her somber vocals. The melancholy of the lyrics and delivery creates a wonderful discordant tension, evoking the emptiness of returning home to find it unsettling in its familiarity. Listen.
The Love On Tour EP is out 5/20 via PNKSLM.
