William Tyler – “Gone Clear”
Last week, the fingerpicking wizard William Tyler released an absolutely gorgeous trailer for Modern Country, his forthcoming album, which he recorded with people like Phil Cook and Wilco’s Glenn Kotche helping him out. According to Tyler, the album is a sort of tribute to a disappearing American culture, one that corporate interests are pushing to the edge of the world. That’s a lot for an instrumental album to take on, but if anyone can handle it, it’s Tyler. And on “Gone Clear,” the first thing we’ve heard from the album, he roams from rambling folk to a more fractal, mathier sound. It’s an absolutely absorbing piece of music, and you can hear it below, via NPR.
Modern Country is out 6/3 (and 6/10 in Europe) on Merge.
